Of Ebony Embers

Event Type(s): Arts / Theatre / Music, History
Organization: Piedmont Virginia Community College
Description: Of Ebony Embers: Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance

The 1920s in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City saw a flourishing African-American culture begin to emerge, as many talented artists celebrated their heritage and took pride in their ancestors and themselves. Through drama and music, Of Ebony Embers brings to life some of the most significant African-American men who helped shape this “Harlem Renaissance” era, connecting the lives and works of three outstanding but very different poets—Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, and Claude McKay—as seen through the eyes of the great painter and muralist Aaron Douglas, described by art historian David Driskell as the “Father of Black American Art.”

The Core Ensemble reprises the role of a Harlem jazz band, with a score that includes music by jazz greats Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Billy Strayhorn, Thelonius Monk, and Charles Mingus, as well as concert music by Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker.
